Unga authored several woodblock-printed books with pictures of flowers and (or) birds. The twenty-one pictures included in one of these books, entitled KachÅ Gafu (i.e., Pictures of Flowers and Birds) and published in 1882, are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Unga was strongly influenced by a Chinese painting style in which the shapes of objects were created using a combination of short lines and areas of pigment. The resulting shapes appear to be unfinished, more like sketches than completed drawings. This unfinished look was intended to give the impression that the picture had been drawn in a moment of artistic inspiration.
